Uncle Dave's Trivia Time!

Assembled by Dave DeBord

A writer’s words come alive when an actor says them. Words should always move a story along but sometimes dialogue is so memorable it lives beyond the story. From “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn” to “Here’s looking at you kid,” a memorable phrase can forever be identified with a specific movie. Here are a dozen quotes. Can you identify the movie (and actor) that immortalized these lines?

1. “Terence Mann was a warm and gentle voice of reason in a time of great madness. He coined the phrase Make Love Not War while other people were chanting Burn, Baby, Burn. He was talking about love and peace and understanding. I cherish every one of his books and I dearly wish he had written some more and I think if you had experienced even a bit of the 60’s, you might feel the same way too . . .No, I think you had two 50’s and moved right on to the 70’s. At least he’s not a book burner, you Nazi cow.”
2. “The Nazis and the Fascists are just as much against democracy as they are against the Communists.”
3. “Captain, it is I—Ensign Pulver—and I just threw your stinking palm tree overboard. Now what’s all this crud about no movie tonight.”
4. “I don’t bray”
5. “I do wish we could chat longer, but I’m having an old friend for dinner.”
6. “A week? Are you kidding? This play has got to close on page four.”
7. “Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again.”
8. “When a man’s partner is killed, he’s supposed to do something about it. It doesn’t make any difference what you thought of him. He was your partner and you’re supposed to do something about it.”
9. “Mr. Brady, it’s the duty of a newspaper to comfort the afflicted and flick the comfortable.”
10. “If I could get back my youth, I’d do anything in the world, except get up early, take exercise or be respectable.”
11. “He said we made a good couple, because I had no expectations and he had too many.”
